Any2 Exchange "Personals" and Member Introductions

clock December 29, 2008 10:54 by author John Savageau
The member community has spoken

The Any2 Exchange fully supports, and encourages open communication among our members.  Face it - the concept of peering implies communications, and what better place for members to meet each other than through the exchange?

So we are going to do a trial allowing members to submit a brief description of their company or operation, add a link tot heir home page or peering page, and hopefully use that to build additional business within tghe Any2 Exchange community.

Here are the guidelines:

  • No more than 10 lines
  • Should tell something very compelling or interesting about your company or network
  • Should include a hyperlink to your home page
  • Cannot reference companies other than your own within your personal or introduction - no name dropping
  • If using a special font, the font must not exceed 11 points
  • CRG West has final say on whether or not personals or introduction content is appropriate for the Any2 exchange web site

Submit your introduction to any2@crgwest.com, and we will try to get it posted within 2 business days.  if this proves popular, we will invest in additional marketplace software development.

Here is the link to our personals and member introductions page

January Any2 Exchange Newsletter - Call for Articles

clock December 29, 2008 09:29 by author John Savageau

We still have space for an additional column in the Any2 Exchange Newsletter January Edition.  We'd be looking for an article between 500~1000 words, with a preference for IPv6-related topics.  The newsletter is generally not focused on marketing or sales for a particular company, however if your company has a very strong case study in the area of IPv6 that would be acceptable.  We are open to both pro and con opinions - however will not accept articles that are vindictive, insulting, or could potentially embarrass an individual or organization.

We'll be going to print around 15 January.  The Any2 newsletter is printed and sent to about 1000 readers, and downloaded around 100 times per day from the Any2 website website.

Sell yourself as a subject matter expert, and provide some useful thought leadership to the Any2 community!  Please send a note with your desired topic to John Savageau (jsavageau@crgwest.com) if you are interested in contributing an article to the January edition.

We are close to finishing planning for the Any2 NorthEast distributed exchange connecting 1275 K St, Reston Exchange, 32 Ave of the Americas (NY City), and 70 Innerbelt (Boston/Somerville).  If any member has any additional opinions or ideas on how to make this work in the best interests of our members, please send us a note at any2@crgwest.com. This was a very positive topic at the Any2 member's meeting earlier in December.

Member's Meeting Notes

clock December 15, 2008 03:16 by author John Savageau

We had around 65 people attend the member's meeting - pretty good turnout.

The presentation getting the best feedback was by Martin Levy from Hurricane Eelectric.  Martin Discussed IPv6 implementation and industry trends.  Most of the presentation dealt with basic instruction on IPv6, with a bit of Hurricane's implementation experience added for graphic support.  IPv6 Presentation Link

Joel Krauska from Slide Inc also gave a great instructional presentation on the basic of peering.  Peering Intro Link

CRG West's main prresentation was more of a status update on CRG West activities relative to Any2, and was kicked off by Tom Ray, President and CEO of CRG West and a Managing Director at the Carlyle Group.  In addition to the high level update from CRG West, Keith Kuhlman and Jerome Favis gave some additional updates on technology development for the exchange, and Bob Evans added a tutorial on the Any2Easy route servers.  Here is a link to CRG West's Presentation.

Additional presentations on the exciting topic of cloud computing and telepresence included:

  • Outstanding live demonstration of telepresence and HD video over public Internet by Scott Charter and WBS Connect
  • Introduction to cloud provisioning by Peter Nokolov from 3tera
  • and Dave Durkee who gave the final presentation of the day from Enki

I'll try to get copies of their presentations for posting to both the blog, as well as our document archive

Some additional requests for updates to the CRG West customer portal included:

Buglist for CRG West Customer Resource Center:

  • There is no way for a customer to add a comment to a trouble ticket or remote handsafter it's been opened... (no way to add new information)
Service Requests just get "Canceled" instead of letting the user add information.
    (similar to comment problem)

Example:  I needed to get a new badge made, so I filled out a service request
of type "Other".  M. Zackoff just canceled the request because I
hadn't put the full name of the new user.
It would be 100X easier if he could ask me to give him the name,
or let me type it in the ticket..   (instead of having me open a new ticket)

  • Some tabs don't open properly in Firefox

Click on "Trouble Tickets", "Operational Documents",
"Circuit Port Performance", or "Help" and it shows up
hidden at the bottom of the page, instead of the top.

  • All new tickets should have a drop down for existing user contact info.(you shouldn't have to type in your name every time)(all you should have to give is a problem description) Keep an "other" option if I have to proxy open a ticket for someone else.
  • New Trouble Tickets Should have a pulldown for existing Work Order Numbers (again with Other, incase your work order isn't listed)
  • Service Requests of Type Other don't show up in history
  • Old packages show up in the Packages list history.  New ones do not.  If the feature isn't being used anymore, delete it?
  • There should be one login for all sites.  (one admin login) Or atleast link the Mange Users information to work for all sites.

sFlow Critique

  • Tech critique:
    • Why don't the graphs use the same time windows?
    • 24-hours of sflow vs 48-hours of real?
    • Why does the sflow use curvy interpolation? (it looks mostly bogus)
    • Why aren't the systems combined? (let me overlay sflow on top of snmp data?
or atleast compare  (XYZ Company is XX% of your total traffic...)
  • Design critique:
    • The full date stamp on snmp data is pretty hard to read and wastes space giving too many datapoints on snmp graph makes the lines hard to gauge.

Overall this was a productive meeting.  Next meeting we will try to expand the networking portion of the meeting to allow more time for member's to socialize.  That was probably the only negative feedback we received - too many presentations, and not enough networking.

If you have any questions or additional comments regarding the Any2 Member's Meeting, please send us a note at any2@crgwest.com

Member's Meeting and New Members

clock November 14, 2008 07:21 by author John Savageau

Starting to get a good response for the 11 Dec Any2 member's meeting.  Again, if you or your network would like to give a 10~15 minute presentation on any topic you might feel of value to the Any2 community, please feel free to let us know.  Also, non-member guests are welcome to attend - we are happy to promote the networking, and have an opportunity to attract additional interest in the community.

California Exchange topics - There is only one user left on the MPT Cisco 6509, and that user will migrate to the Foundry on Saturday. Then all GE/10GE users will be on Foundry ports.  We are also currently operating on the new wavelength between MPT and One Wilshire.  sFlow is available for all GE/10GE users through your portal login.  We think this is a great utility, and are very interested in your feedback and suggestions on how we might make this better.
